Mud, sweat and more mud
When we took delivery of two shiny new cyclocross bikes back at the start of October, little did we know that this would be such a good purchase and lead to so much fun? However since they were a very perfect shade of blue to match our team car, so it seemed rude not to buy them.
The Vitus entry model bikes from Chain Reaction Cycles were only ready the day before round one of the Ulster CycloCross league, which meant there was no time for a test ride.
Garth and Xeno turned up at sunny Lurgan Park for their first taste of cyclocross racing. They both fell off, their chains came off, and they generally were in at the deep end. But once the results were published, some nail-biting hours later; Garth was 14th finisher out of over 60 entries and Xeno had taken 4th place in U16s.
They had well and truly got the bug.
The past 8 weeks has taken us to venues across Ulster, every Sunday morning its an early start as not to be left out, Amber has taken part in the very competitive U12 age group races too.
Only one week has it rained, and boy did it rain – just as the boys were being held on the start line for what seemed like ages. The heavens opened over Dungannon and we all got absolutely soaked, including most of the spectators who had left their umbrella in the car.
Now, 8 rounds have been completed; Amber’s best result was 8th place in the Larne, with Garth & Xeno picking up a couple of podium places in Larne, Ormeau Park and Falls Park.
Roll on the Ulster Championships on Sunday 14 December; we have our hoses, water and buckets at the ready.
